Halloween Product Concept

Welcome back to another Designerland holiday special post. We’re getting closer to Halloween, so it’s time to roll out another product concept.

Each Halloween, I patiently await the Disney Store and Theme Park Merchandise to roll out their haunted holiday product lines. And every year, I hope and pray for a Haunted Mansion pumpkin carving kit. Sadly, each year comes and goes and this concept is never added to their product line lists, so I took it upon myself to create one. Well, I created the primary panel display for the packaging and 3 stencils that you can save, print and try for yourselves.

In an ideal world, I would propose more of a collector set with special packaging and higher end tools, but for this concept, I kept it along the lines of the Pumpkin Masters brand carving kits. I know this product could be easily sourced and they already have a working relationship with DCP, so why not the theme parks?

Anyway, I hope you enjoy these. There are countless possibilities on how you could use the stencils, from carving to painting, etching or scraping, so let your creativity out! If you do decide to join me on this Halloween carving adventure, send me your photos and I'll post them here. I'm sure your pumpkins won't mind the bright lights! Thanks for stopping by and have a swell week!

Note: These patterns are challenging to actually carve traditionally, I suggest the etching or painting method. Glow in the Dark Paint would be an amazing effect on these!!! If you do want to try to actually carve them, I suggest enlarging the pattern and finding a large pumpkin to use.

Welcome to a special Designerland post. As many of you already know, the Disney Parks blog announced more of the Special Edition Epcot 30th Anniversary merchandise, and Designerland’s concepts for the World Showcase shirts have made it into the product line! If you haven't seen the article, then click the below picture and give it a read:

Two years ago during the D23 Expo, I stumbled upon a WDW opening day brochure in the collector’s forum. I picked up the black and white brochure, flipped through the pages and found an entire series of Epcot icons for the World Showcase I had never seen before. I knew instantly that these one-color logos needed to be honored through ink on cotton! I threw down the 30 bucks for the brochure. When I ran into my friend Erica later that day, I was so excited about the idea that I wanted to tell her right there on the expo floor, but instead, I decided to wait.

When I got back to Indiana and sat down to start scanning and recreating, I wondered why these logos hadn’t been used sooner. After I unveiled the series here on Designerland, Disney contacted me and wanted to take the designs I had done since Epcot’s 30th Anniversary was just around the corner. Disney did want to change the colors up a bit and add the two pavilions I had yet to showcase on my blog. Since the brochure I’d used for reference actually pre-dated these two pavilions, the good folks at Disney contacted the archives and found the logos I needed.

It's surreal to think that finding one little brochure would turn into this. I want to thank all my followers and readers who supported the shirts when I first posted them here at Designerland, and of course, the amazing folks I worked with at Disney for seeing the potential and listening to the fans. I hope you enjoy the designs!

New Designerland Soundboard

The fourth installation of the Designerland Soundboards: Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Pirates of the Caribbean Soundboard is a simple web application I created out of my appreciation for the classic attraction.  A web app will run SLOWER than a normal native app. The difference between a web app and a native app is that a web app is hosted and "lives" on the internet whereas a native app actually downloads and "lives" in your mobile device.

PLEASE NOTE: The soundclips will take a while to download, I wish that they would load faster but unfortunately that's just how web apps work.

The Pirates of the Caribbean Soundboard was developed for iphone users in mind but is supported by Google Android mobile devices as well.

For iphone users: using the internet on your phone go here: POTC
Once the page loads click on the "Add to Bookmarks" icon. Now click the "Add to Home Screen" and the Tiki Room Soundboard icon should load. That's it.

For Google Android users: using the internet on your phone go here: POTC
Bookmark the page. Now open the browser bookmarks screen, then long-press the bookmark you want, then select the add to home screen.

The site will look odd if you just go to the link above on your desktop computer or iPad. The url/site is formatted to fit your mobile device's screen and the sounds will not work unless you're using Google Chrome or Safari.

Well I hope you guys enjoy this latest addition. If you like this app and don't mind it taking a while to load I have a few other Disney attraction soundboard apps in the wings!

Thanks again for stopping!

In the Wild

Cory tweeted me this pic of himself enjoying a tasty pineapple float so I thought I'd share it with you all.  Thanks for shooting it my way and for the support.

I still get about 5 emails a week in regards to if I'm ever going to do another run of the shirts...it's getting to the point that I might just consider it. ;)  I have ideas for some new shirts that would be able to buy come this spring. Stay tuned and see you tomorrow evening for a new Designerland Attraction Typography Case Study!!!!
