<br />
As of late you may have noticed that Designerland has become well rather stagnate. I apologize for not keeping up but with my full time day job, my freelance work and renovating a home...there just isn't enough time in the day.<br />
<br />
Since September my freelance work grew and the projects I got to be a part of were simply a dream for a Disney dork like myself. This year will be an amazing year for park merchandise, just wait and see!!!<br />
<br />
Things are about to change here at Designerland and for the good thanks to you guys out there who have supported me and Designerland for the past few years. I have officially been hired by Disney! Some of you that follow me on twitter may already know and again I apologize for taking so long to post it here. I've been in the process of relocating down to Orlando and come this Monday I will be 100% official.<br />
<br />
None of this would of happened without your support and again I thank all of you for helping my dream come true.<br />
<br />
What does that mean for future of Designerland? Sadly, it means that the blog will be no more. I may continue to post type case studies. Typography is one of my favorite things within the parks but this is a new chapter in my life and one that I've been working 12 long and hard years for. I hope to create things that you want and will allow you to take home a bit of the magic you experienced on your vacations, trips and outings.<br />
<br />
I thank you all again for the kind words, the support, the encouragement and the love you've shown over the past few years. Please keep in touch and be sure to follow me on twitter as I will always be around.<br />
<br />
Your greatest fan,<br />
Richard<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to Designerland. Yes, I know...it's been ages since I've posted anything. Life does carry on and between my full time job, freelance clients and renovating a home there's not enough hours in the day for font finding and other fun stuff. Granted, I have enough shirt concepts in the wings to last me until next Christmas but I just can't keep posting that. I'm not a one trick pony, there's many tricks up this magician's sleeve.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Speaking of fonts, I just locked into snatching up a ton of new photos from Epcot and hope to continue our Designerland Typography Tour of Epcot Center come late this fall. In the mean time here's a new shirt concept based on one of my favorite parades, SpectroMagic.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The main logo of the parade along with the Mickey globe icon and original WDW Resort logo have all been treated with a vintage "Hamilton Type" letterpress like look. The color palette is a simple 2 color, over print method in aqua and carrot orange. I was channeling my inner Kevin and Jody when I picked this palette out.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="594" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-klHDV2PLwGs/UcsD8iQGtnI/AAAAAAAABuo/nD4GaMjnJZ4/s640/SpectroMagic.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"> Well that does it for this installment. Tune in soon for more fun Designerland offerings.</span></div>

Sound out the twilight bark!<br />
<br />
<br />
He's currently writing an epub for Fathers & Sons who enjoy Disney parks, the book contains fun facts intermingled with games families can play while in line for an attraction or just walking through the parks. Who says you need interactive touch screens and digital queue playgrounds to keep kids entertained???<br />

Tune in later this fall for more on this jaunty project! See you all soon!!!!Richardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07428447481330197209noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8281643789335463911.post-77752287991313304982013-04-15T11:22:00.002-04:002013-04-15T11:22:58.843-04:00Different Disney StrokesHope everyone had a swell weekend. Things have been crazy around here so alas no new font case studies...soon I hope.<br />
<br />
Over the past weekend I did have some time to do a little jaunty treasure hunting at some antique stores around the area. If you follow me on twitter then you saw my finds! For some reason I always find things in sets of threes. It's kind of become a game. Once we find one thing we know somewhere, somehow two more should follow....they usually do.<br />
<br />
When I'm out and about looking for various vintage theme park merchandise I tend to always come across tons of non theme park Disney antiques. The one thing I find so interesting are the various different Walt Disney logos/signatures used on the packaging.<br />
<br />
Most all of them have the look and feel of the free flowing, bubbly Walt script but some are vary unique in their brush stokes, weight and height.<br />
<br />
I've started collecting photos of these various Walt scripts while out and about. Are any of them real? Are they all fake? Who knows, either way I love the feel and look of them. <br />
<br />
One logo script I came across a few months back I recreated and changed into a new vintage (double entendre) logo for Walt Disney Imagineering.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="418" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NghamILgUlU/UWwWEZUQs3I/AAAAAAAABpc/uCnnNRl4zpY/s640/ScriptLogo.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<br />
Can anyone guess what type of product this original logo was used for?<br />
<br />

<img border="0" height="238" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ue1GZY3lZps/UVhswUGV_sI/AAAAAAAABno/CsLKAFmv3kk/s640/2012Retro71Header.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to yet another Retro Tee concept. I hope everyone has had a swell weekend. Last week I had such an amazing amount of fan feedback on the Enchanted Tiki Room tee concept that I decided to roll out another concept I've had collecting dust in the wings.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Unlike my typography case studies, I have enough shirt concepts to get me through another two years if I just posted only concepts for apparel but I'm not a one trick pony and typography is my passion. I had some free time this weekend to actually begin tracking down original typefaces and display font used throughout The Land pavilion. Hopefully, I will be able to find more vintage research...most likely I'll have to break down and use some of todays fonts and typefaces.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Back to this weeks concept, the design is based on one of the Disneyland marketing photos of Walt actually inside the show building. I decided I really wanted to push my experimentation with frequency and dot angle when it came to halftones, not to mention it has a nice throw back look. I scaled the color of the photo back to a darker shade of the tee shirt color. On top of the photo I overlaid a graphic from a 1963 marketing piece that came from a simple 4 color brochure. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v7nnHlOYYhg/UVhwRNxoiwI/AAAAAAAABnw/eM0Zdcb7Bpo/s1600/EnchantedTikiTeeDetail.jpg" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I went back and forth on color combinations of this design. In the end I decided to keep the color palette 85% true to that simple 4 color brochure, while the colors don't necessarily harken the themes of Adventureland, they do hold true to my original inspiration. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="595" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H4-IWS9ojVI/UVhw1aIAVhI/AAAAAAAABoA/4RmciMGaejk/s640/EnchantedTikiTee.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I could see the shirt paired with a nice pair of deep khaki cargo shorts and sported on a warm summer day. Well that does it for this weeks post. I hope all of you have a good week and see you back here real soon!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

<img border="0" height="238" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UBp561--Qzc/UU_BJmzCY8I/AAAAAAAABnI/aBg3hYTwJJk/s640/2013Retro55Header.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to a new Designerland post. I'd like to first of all thank all of your who ordered the new edition of the Tiki Pineapple Whip shirt! I will be placing the order this week and they should be on the print production schedule for next week, be sure to tune in for my updates. Now onto this weeks post...</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />As I've mentioned before I just acquired a home and have been spending all my free time with this retro renovation therefore the Designerland Typography Case Studies have taken a back seat. Hopefully, I'll get around to our next one in the upcoming weeks as I have some downtime from the home. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Now onto this weeks post. . .a new Retro '55 shirt. While the content may not be from the year 1955, the ideals and dreams surrounding it come from the yesteryears of classic Disneyland which we all love and enjoy.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7vjvTUXRtk8/UU_BRwUZZ-I/AAAAAAAABnY/4wMH-YymmMQ/s320/TikiRoom.jpg" width="231" /></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />This weeks concept is based on the World Engagement print advertisement put out in June of 1963 in promotion of the Enchanted Tiki Room. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />Well that will do it for this weeks post. Tune in soon for more fun Designerland updates. Thanks as always for stopping by and have a swell week!</span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to Designerland and a long-overdue post. By now you probably know that this upcoming Friday, Disney will release its second trip to the Wonderful World of Oz with their new major motion picture, Oz the Great and Powerful. I'm truly excited to see how Disney handles it. I hope it fairs well as I love the mythos of Oz and would like to see a franchise with this property. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I grew up with Disney's first Oz film, Return to Oz, which still remains one of my all-time favorite Disney films. To celebrate both the new and the old, I created a few shirt concepts. The first two are based on Return to Oz and the last is based on the new film. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The first shirt is based on the Powder of Life and the three magical words spoken to activate it. The design plays heavily with ornate typography and flourishes that pay homage to both the time period and the movie. For you extreme fans, take note of the typography used on the electro shock machine—the logo is brilliantly ornate. Also, the typography used for the Doctor's newspaper advertisement? The same font used for the home of 999 happy haunts. The back of the shirt has a small tag depicting the Gump.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well that does it for this week’s post. I apologize for my lack of posts as of late, but I'm juggling a few projects, and one in particular is rather big. I just recently purchased my first house and am in the midst of a complete renovation...so hunting down typography has been put on the back burner for now. I hope to find some time in the next two months to tackle a new Epcot Case Study. Thanks for stopping by and see you all real soon!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I almost forgot to mention, don't forget to order the LE Version 2 of the Tiki Pineapple Whip Tee. I'll be taking orders for another 3 weeks—after that, the design will be retired for good, so don't hesitate. </span></div>

Thanks to all who voted. To celebrate I'm now taking presale orders on the new tee!<br />
<br />
Since the end of the last tiki whip sale two years ago, I've received daily emails asking for the reprint of the original. I never knew that 2 years later people would still be asking for the shirt. Now is your time to act because I don't know if I'll revisit the design again...maybe in another two years I'll be singing a different tune. LOL!<br />
<br />
I recommend ordering a few. Think of friends, family, holidays and birthdays because once I'm done with presales I won't be taking any additional orders.<br />
<br />
You have from now until March 24th (sale ends at Midnight EST) to order, if you have any questions please contact me at my gmail account.<br />
<br />
You can <a href="http://rjterpstra.com/tiki/" target="_blank">CLICK HERE</a> to order or simply click on the side banner over to the RIGHT.<br />
<br />
Mahalo and thanks again for the support! Look for new Designerland content coming soon.<br />

So cast your vote now, who knows what I may do with the information!?!<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to Designerland and our first case study of 2013. This year we'll be looking at the amazing fonts found throughout Epcot Center, with our first stop in Future World. Unlike the Magic Kingdom, when my family arrives at Epcot, we always begin our journey counter clockwise, so it only feels natural to dive in to the fonts of The Living Seas. I'll only cover the typography from the pre-Nemo era since this is the Living Seas we all remember and love.<span style="font-size: small;"></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>

<img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Dpk9DK91SAM/UPOe5HAgOdI/AAAAAAAABVE/tscevhcVkK4/s400/TheLivingSeasTeaser.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">One thing I appreciate about Epcot and especially Future World is the symbiotic branding of each pavilion, so we’ll see many of the same display fonts and classic typefaces over and over again. That's called hierarchy of design, but over time, we see that hierarchy broken as wackier, overly-themed display fonts sneak their way in.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In particular, when looking at the Living Seas, sans serifs fonts are the most prominent, which is fitting because sans serifs are generally used to convey a modern, futuristic feel. There are a few extremely futuristic display fonts scattered throughout Sea Base Alpha, but not too many. As I mentioned before, Disney fans weren't all too keen on photographing signage back in the heyday of the Living Seas, so tracking down fonts was somewhat difficult. Over time a few serif fonts such as that classic but overused Times New Roman made an appearance within the pavilion. In my research I found only one place this typeface was used—while I suspect this was just a quick fix type of situation, it still makes me cringe. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The Living Seas was my all-time favorite pavilion within Future World, partly because of the powerful preshow with its amazing narration and partly because I have a fondness for water. This week, in addition to the type case study, I'm also showcasing a t-shirt concept honoring my favorite pavilion. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: start;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The design is based on the vintage graphic illustration used on an early letterhead that promoted this new pavilion. The design is a simple three color gradient in shades of blue taken from the front facade of the building. This is set in front of a simple back print medallion with the Seas icon, typeset name and original Epcot Center logo.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to a new year here at Designerland. I hope all of you had an amazing holiday season and are ready for what 2013 has in store for all of us!<span style="font-size: small;"></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">As you all know, this year we will focus on the typography used throughout Epcot Center, starting in Future World then making our way around the World Showcase. I've spent the last few weeks hunting for display fonts and various typefaces. So far in my research, I have noticed two things: </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">1. Disney fans just don't take as many pictures of signage/environmental graphics in Epcot as they do in the Magic Kingdom and 2. The typography in general is lighter in terms of usage when looking at Future World.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">If you have photos of any Epcot signage or if you're out and about with your smart phone handy, do me a kindness and start snapping away photos to share! Living in Indiana really limits my access to the parks in order to conduct my research. Before I even started Designerland, I had spent about two years hunting down and cataloguing the materials I’ve covered thus far in our typography case studies.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Next week I'll look at the fonts used throughout the (pre-Nemo) Living Seas. I've tracked down a few fonts but could always use more.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Now onto this week’s post. Since we're celebrating the kick off of Epcot typography here at Designerland, I thought it be fitting to release a new Retro '71 shirt concept based on Epcot...one from the Designerland vaults as they say.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This week’s concept is based on the mural painted by Claudio Mazzoli at the entrance of Spaceship Earth. The entire mural design is framed in a rounded-corner rectangle with the Epcot Center and Future World typeset logos. Lastly, some light distressing gives the overall design a not-so-perfect printed look.</span></div>

<img border="0" height="238" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5RfmczPWvSk/ULw5uHrsSRI/AAAAAAAABOo/vvGL9J07NZE/s640/2012Retro71Header.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to another fun filled Retro '55 shirt concept. I hope you all had a terrific Thanksgiving and are now in full tilt Holiday mode, like we are here at Designerland. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">For this weeks shirt concept I wanted to honor the Holiday tradition that is the Disney Parks and Resorts Holiday Parades. More in point, those jaunty deer from Disney's 1961 "Christmas in Many Lands" parade that are still around to this day!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VgA4RKovT4c/ULw5eM_d9TI/AAAAAAAABOg/PAyo5tSdRec/s400/DLHolidayTeeDetail.jpg" width="296" /></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />I came across a brochure advertisement with the deer on it and after some clean up I tested out a new technique I've been toying around with for the past month. While I enjoy using various aged and vintage top textures on my designs, because they align with the branding, my passion is really for tradition printing. This new look and technique is more of a woodblock/letterpress feel which I am in love with at the moment. Granted, it's more work than just overlaying a texture but the end result really pays homage to tradition press.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="594" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DTeNTjuyW6Q/ULw5Y9fEV_I/AAAAAAAABOY/CpetyBVMSDI/s640/DisneylandHolidayTee.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />Well that does it for this weeks post. As you all know I'm out and about scouring the net for those fun fonts and typefaces of tomorrow in preparation for the new year when we tackle Epcot. Until next time have a great week and see you all real soon!</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="238" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yosWUqltih0/UKCGNiGXHaI/AAAAAAAABNE/5naAteBSB_U/s640/2012Retro71Header.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to another fun-filled edition of our Retro '55 apparel line. This week’s concept is based on one of my favorite Disneyland attractions, the Matterhorn Bobsleds.<span style="font-size: small;"></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The design of the shirt combines "fast moving" typography with an appropriated bobsled graphic. Changes to typography and the color palette give this old idea a fresh new look. Some of you (midwesterns) may catch the subtle reference not-so-hidden in the shirt!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="296" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jyvaeob-2GE/UKCGbtbVm-I/AAAAAAAABNU/fzT8eocQqP0/s400/ShirtDetail.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The Matterhorn Bobsleds opened at Disneyland in 1959, but this design evokes more of an early 80's feel. I have it visualized as a four color design on a heather ringed shirt, but in all actuality, I would like the design be a full color, shiny and slick heat press graphic without the texture. Alas, those details are difficult to convey through Illustrator and Photoshop.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xz4MCwdcuew/UKCGTdLKuSI/AAAAAAAABNM/ZIj57CSnD3Y/s640/MatterhornShirt.jpg" width="507" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well that does it for this week’s post. I will be taking a jolly holiday for the next few weeks, and my posts will be far and few between until I begin the Epcot series at the beginning of the new year. Be sure to check back from time to time as I have over 50 apparel designs sitting in the wings and a few jaunty ideas for special Christmas time posts. So until next time, thanks for stopping in and have a good week!</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to a long-overdue Designerland Typography Case Study. This week we will look at the wonderful typefaces seen throughout the Grand Floridian Resort. Before we start, I'd like to give a BIG shout out to Cristy Greene for helping me with this post. Her photos helped me out in more ways than one. Thanks so much!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">When looking at the typefaces used throughout the Grand Floridian, one thing can be certain: there are no frills or wacky display fonts. The font palette used for most of the signage and way-finding graphics use classic fonts to evoke a sense of tradition and elegance. When looking at type, the branding is very consistent with one main typeface used on most of the graphics. There are a few elegant yet classy display fonts, usually in the form of scripts used as well.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>

<img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PhYg_n7rqmQ/UJc_IozltkI/AAAAAAAABMk/tx__5eR493w/s400/GrandFloridianTeaser.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">One font in particular was somewhat tough to track down since type foundries come and go. About a month ago, I stumbled across a fellow font aficionado whose mission is to track down typefaces from one particular foundry that was big in the 60s and 70s but is no longer. As I went through the collection, I noticed many fonts that Disney used in the early days of the park. In fact, one font that I had believed to be custom was included in the collection! Since this font appears on a graphic from a current project, I suspect Disney has the entire collection of this gone-but-not-forgotten foundry and are still using it today. Perhaps Disney acquired the rights to use these fonts when they were still developing Walt Disney World. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fmtIpVB7VCM/UJc_C-L6RjI/AAAAAAAABMc/mu57xu_HMTQ/s640/GF.Poster.jpg" width="414" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">While I have an appreciation for the fonts used within the Grand Floridian, they're not my favorite used within the parks. But my favorites will have to wait for another post, so tune in after Christmas when we head over to Epcot and begin our journey looking into the fonts and faces used to brand the 21st century. In the meantime, if there's an attraction or graphic that hasn't been covered within the Magic Kingdom thus far, let me know. I'd love to cover it between now and the holidays.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well that does it for this week’s post. Tune in next week as I have a plethora of new Retro '71 and '55 shirt concepts just waiting to be released. Thanks for stopping by and have a swell week.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to our last special Halloween holiday post. Over the summer, after watching a viral video of a cotton candy spinner, I developed a small obsession with the art of cotton candy making. I researched brands, makers, machines and various other sugary sweet offerings related to this fun delectable. When I learned about the LED light-up cones used for cotton candy over in Disney California Adventure, I had an idea for how to put a new spin on cotton candy. <span style="font-size: small;"></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">My idea was to reformulate the sugar floss so that the coloring within the sugar crystals is black light-responsive as well as safe to eat. In place of the multi-color LED lights within the cones would be mini black light LEDs. I could only think of one place where this product should live: The Haunted Mansion Glow-in-the-Dark Cotton Candy Cart.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="202" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2ERrZR9b9rc/UI3OlgrPhkI/AAAAAAAABL0/J7BzrHFkMQ0/s640/TITLE.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The cotton candy would be branded as Cobweb Candy, and through the technique of double spinning—which is used to create multi-colored cotton candy on one cone—the treat would take on a ghostly appearance.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jUYzGFh3f5k/UI3JeAbUW_I/AAAAAAAABK0/06SrcrcgNgc/s640/CCProduct.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">For the past six years I have had a Disney partner in crime. While he lives in Canada and I live in Indiana, our passion for all things Disney has kept us conspiring toward magical madness. I decided to run the concept by him to see if he'd like to help out with the idea. He loved it and we both agreed to work together in bringing this dream one step closer to a reality. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">We came up with the story that the cart belongs to a Mason who deals in the dead. The cart’s design has bricks, shovels, bags of mortar, trowels and other various tools a graveyard Mason would need. We incorporated the wrought iron detailing from the Mansion into the top of the cart to help tie in the Mansion’s theme. The signage plays upon various fonts used over time for the Mansion’s branding. We imagine the cast members working the cart would be dressed similarly to the caretaker within the Mansion. The cart would have an area for the cotton candy spinner machine, finished product behind glass and compartments for the ingredients and the cash register. The spinner machine itself would also have a center black light so the candy would glow while the cast member spins his webs of wonder.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">I want to give a big thanks to Ian Giles for helping out with this concept! I couldn't blue-sky without you!!!! Well that does it for this week’s post. <div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to another Designerland holiday special post. We’re getting closer to Halloween, so it’s time to roll out another product concept. <span style="font-size: small;"></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Each Halloween, I patiently await the Disney Store and Theme Park Merchandise to roll out their haunted holiday product lines. And every year, I hope and pray for a Haunted Mansion pumpkin carving kit. Sadly, each year comes and goes and this concept is never added to their product line lists, so I took it upon myself to create one. Well, I created the primary panel display for the packaging and 3 stencils that you can save, print and try for yourselves.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j6a4H0tmzhA/UISv0JIqxfI/AAAAAAAABKI/GEMOFhaqrCg/s640/PPD-01.jpg" width="494" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In an ideal world, I would propose more of a collector set with special packaging and higher end tools, but for this concept, I kept it along the lines of the Pumpkin Masters brand carving kits. I know this product could be easily sourced and they already have a working relationship with DCP, so why not the theme parks?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Anyway, I hope you enjoy these. There are countless possibilities on how you could use the stencils, from carving to painting, etching or scraping, so let your creativity out! If you do decide to join me on this Halloween carving adventure, send me your photos and I'll post them here. I'm sure your pumpkins won't mind the bright lights! </span>Thanks for stopping by and have a swell week!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
Note: These patterns are challenging to actually carve traditionally, I suggest the etching or painting method. Glow in the Dark Paint would be an amazing effect on these!!! If you do want to try to actually carve them, I suggest enlarging the pattern and finding a large pumpkin to use.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to another special Halloween post here at Designerland. Since my designs are usually based on theme park offerings, I wanted to try something different and showcase some designs based on the movies.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="306" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aUj8HDmaeyk/UHtRxpfyz4I/AAAAAAAABJI/9FIMk3yuuaY/s640/Header.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">When I think of Halloween and Disney, a few live action classics come to mind. As a child, I was fond of the darker side of Disney, growing up with such cult classics as Something Wicked this Way Comes and The Watcher in the Woods. I’ve always been amazed that these pictures were released by the wholesome mouse—they’re dark, creepy, and at times downright scary, so when Halloween rolls around, I still love watching them. And while not as spooky, I have to throw Hocus Pocus into the mix. I remember going to the theater with my parents and little sister on opening night and instantly loving the pure campy goodness. Watching it today, I realize there are some themes and dialogue that aren't so family-oriented, which make it even more of a hoot to watch.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bxbR7_B5eFg/UHtLS3-_F2I/AAAAAAAABIg/kje5GQrOQ74/s1600/series-02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="270" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bxbR7_B5eFg/UHtLS3-_F2I/AAAAAAAABIg/kje5GQrOQ74/s640/series-02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In typical Designerland fashion, I've created this series of shirts based on these classic seasonal Disney flicks. I really enjoy pushing myself and learning different ways of transforming existing art into something usable for screen printing. Sure, I could just do full color sublimation print, but I feel there's an amount of hand skill and craft lost with sublimation printing. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KTMzSX26DVw/UHtIx-drEcI/AAAAAAAABII/lziyq83duW4/s1600/SWTWCFront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="594" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KTMzSX26DVw/UHtIx-drEcI/AAAAAAAABII/lziyq83duW4/s640/SWTWCFront.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The first design is based on the poster art for Something Wicked this Way Comes. The art from the poster is simply stunning with its semi-loose abstract feel and various watercolor and gauche washes. The hand lettering for the main title is equally beautiful. I got to try a new trick with the type treatment in order to give it a letterpress look.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="594" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oIGO1RW258A/UHtI65nxwtI/AAAAAAAABIQ/aqMSP6apnf0/s640/WITWfront.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The second shirt in the series is taken from the poster from The Watcher in the Woods. A piece like this deserves to be brought back into the present and honored with more than just a poster, so a shirt seems like the natural progression. The collage lends itself to a nearly all-over print format.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="593" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_0EF9ZKCH8I/UHtJDPrZ5kI/AAAAAAAABIY/WcAoCcNXRw8/s640/HPFront.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Lastly, my Hocus Pocus concept uses the poster art done by the amazing Drew Struzan. The VHS and DVDs all use a real promo photo, but they really should have run amok with the original poster art.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I guess the moral of the post is that classic poster design is becoming a thing of the past—hardly anyone produces new masterpieces that fans, designers and artists simply drool over. Well that does it for this week’s post. I can see shirts like these fitting in well as a part of a D23 special Halloween release or the like. How do YOU celebrate the Halloween season along with Disney? As always, thanks for stopping by and be sure to tune in next week.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Welcome back to Designerland. I hope you all had a swell weekend. This week's post was supposed to be a new typography case study, but as I'm not through with all my research and font-finding, I will instead present the Haunted Mansion Halloween Costumes!<span style="font-size: small;"></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="308" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1fbjyiQUick/UHItTbB0mUI/AAAAAAAABGc/lhCPU4igzSk/s640/Header.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Like many of you, I was part of the boxed costume generation. I remember going to the store and seeing the shelves lined with boxes of various monsters, cartoon characters and movie stars peering at me through their cellophane die-cut windows. Picking the right costume was important because you wanted to make sure no other kid showed up to school in the same one. I can remember that tense moment when the teacher told us to go put on our costumes. We'd all run to the closet, each of us grabbing up our boxed costumes, the cellophane crackling as we opened our boxes, and we would each scan the room to see if we matched with anyone else. Luckily, I was always the odd kid out. While most kids wanted G. I. Joe or Hulk Hogan, I was Yoda or some obscure glowing skeleton creature.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The most popular vinyl box costume producer was Ben Cooper, followed closely by Collegeville. I was always drawn to Ben Cooper’s line of costumes due to the quality of design and selection of characters. Since the plastic masks and vinyl “aprons” were the Halloween uniforms for so many of us, I wanted to pay homage to Ben Cooper by retheming some of his classic costume box designs to align with Designerland & Disney Theme Park merchandise. I recreated the mask designs, using existing Disney art and are FPO.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Well that about does it for this week’s post. We'll be honoring the Halloween season all month long here at Designerland, so stay tuned for more frighteningly fun posts. As for the next Case Study, that'll have to wait until next month. As always, thanks for stopping by and see you all next week.</span></div>

<br />Two of the prints are actual off-set printed in a similar fashion to vintage comic books, with the ink plates slightly off register/offset and various halftones used throughout.
